The City of Sails is full of unique and memorable romantic opportunities.

Auckland is known for many things — but romance isn’t usually one of them. Which is simply to say it doesn’t have the same reputation as Paris or Venice, heavily marketed as classic spots to swoon. When most travelers think about Auckland, they might instead think about its harbor or the rain — but there’s far more to the City of Sails. If you’re visiting Auckland with your significant other, here are some of the most romantic activities in Auckland to make a lasting impression.

Auckland is ringed by dozens of vineyards, perfect for a leisurely day of sitting and sipping wine. Ride the ferry to Waiheke Island and stroll down a white-sand beach before enjoying tastings at a luxurious vineyard looking back toward the city skyline. Or go on a wine tasting tour of Auckland. If you have your own car (and are safe to drive), finish the day by watching the sunset from Piha or Muriwai beaches.

Embark on an Auckland dinner cruise, indulging in wine, cocktails or beer with the wind blowing in your hair. Get sweeping views of the Harbour Bridge and the surrounding Hauraki Gulf Islands, and continue the evening with a stroll through the bars and restaurants of Viaduct Harbour.

For a romantic outing that doesn’t involve wine, pack a picnic and spend a day at the Auckland Botanic Gardens, wandering the manicured grounds and relaxing beneath a tree. Or, if you’re traveling on foot in the city center and the gardens are too far, take the picnic to Auckland Domain, just a quick walk from downtown.

If rain does happen to suddenly fall, spend an afternoon hopping your way through Auckland’s famous cafés, cradling a soothing hot chocolate or coffee while nibbling on freshly baked pastries. Grab a comfortable window seat and watch the rain come down.

Finally, for a romantic Auckland experience bordering on the extreme, bond over the fear of walking the ledge on the towering Auckland SkyWalk. Here, from 630 feet above ground on a narrow metal ledge, try to look out — instead of down — at the epic views before you. Once firmly backed away from the ledge and inside the top of the SkyTower,  toast your brave adventure with a drink at the Auckland SkyLounge.
